Tyler Davis’ 1984 Porsche 944 with a Turbocharged 07K Inline-Five

Tyler Davis had a simple plan for his 1984 Porsche 944; just drive and enjoy. But as most car projects go, eventually a growing voice inside his head requested more power.

Tyler considered several options until he stumbled across Boost Brothers Garage’s swap kit. Their kit allows for someone to swap a 2.5 L Volkswagen “07K” inline-five into a Porsche 944. The kit includes all the parts needed such as mounts, oil pan, intake manifold, and bellhousing.

Tyler liked the idea of a unique swap and retaining a German designed motor. So with the parts from the kit, Tyler swapped a turbocharged 2.5 L VW 07K inline-five. The motor retains the factory internals but is boosted by a Pulsar 5855G turbocharger.

On the hub dyno the motor produced its amazing exhaust note and a healthy 409 hp (304 kW) and 472 Nm (348 lb-ft) of torque.

Unfortunately Boost Brothers Garage’s kit is designed for 1985 and newer 944s. So Tyler had to modify the firewall for everything to fit properly. Tyler also used the talents of Far Lane Speed & Fabrication to fabricate a custom downpipe. That is paired with a stainless steel exhaust.

Behind the inline-five is a Spec Stage 3 clutch and flywheel inside the Boost Brothers Garage’s bellhousing. From there power is transmitted to a Porsche 944 Turbo (951) five-speed manual transaxle with a limited-slip differential.

Tyler did not stop at the powertrain. He rebuilt the suspension with Reaction adjustable coilovers and Wilwood disc brakes on each corner. Tyler removed the Torsion bar and converted to a manual steering rack. The exterior is kept mostly stock except for a set of Riken Mesh wheels.

On the inside Tyler kept the interior clean and functional. He replaced the factory steering wheel with a Momo Prototipo steering wheel. Behind the restored seats Tyler installed a roll bar.
