1987 Chevy R20 with a 6.6 L Duramax V8 and 3500HD Chassis
Dmax Store received a 1987 Chevy R20 rolling shell with the goal of building a square body with modern diesel power and offroad technology. The result of their hard work is a capable truck called “Dmax Squared“.
In the engine bay sits a turbodiesel 6.6 L Duramax LBZ V8 sourced from a 2006 Silverado 3500HD. The engine features a Garrett Stage 1 turbocharger, Max-Flow manifolds, Max-Flow downpipe, Max-Flow upgraded water pump, and Dmax Store’s high capacity oil pan.
Behind the diesel V8 is a Dmax Store Stage 3 Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission and NP263XHD transfer case. The rest of the drivetrain consists of a Dana Super 60 front axle and Sterling 10.5-inch rear axle from a 2006 F-350 Superduty. Both feature 4.30 ratios and Detroit locking differentials.
The powertrain is supported on a shortened 2007 GM 3500HD chassis. The 4-link front suspension uses Superduty springs, Fox Elite 2.5 shocks, Kryptonite radius arms, and Hellwig sway bar. The rear suspension uses custom Deaver leaf-springs with outboard Fox Elite 2.5 shocks on custom airbags.
Dmax Store installed custom fabricated front and rear bumpers with 12K winches. The truck rides on Detroit Steel 18×9-inch wheels with BFGoodrich KM3 37×13.5-inch tires. The offroad trail is thoroughly illuminated by a Baja Designs XL8 light bar, LP4 pillar lights, and Top Gear Autosport headlights. You can view more photos of the truck on the @dmax_squared or on the project’s FB page.
