The Other 356
The 1955 Porsche Continental, a one year only 356 created for the American market. » Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCLzUP9yuwqcup4yq4uCiXg In 1955, influential US Porsche distributor Max Hoffman convinced Porsche that American buyers would respond better to a name than a number. The Porsche 356 became the Continental for the US market. Then Ford stepped in. What remained was a small chapter in Porsche history and one of the most interesting versions of the early Porsche 356 Pre A. This particular 1955 Porsche 356 Continental spent much of its life in Washington State with a car collector before eventually making its way to Australia in 2020 to Sydney enthusiast Greg Gudgeon. Its surviving documentation identifies the car as a genuine Continental delivered through Max Hoffman, with the original delivery paperwork and Porsche Kardex helping confirm its history. For Greg, it was also the missing piece. A lifelong Porsche lover, he had been searching for an early Porsche 356 Pre A when the Continental became available. It was the car that would finally complete the generations of Porsche represented in his collection. It is not a concourse car. It has been sympathetically restored, retains much of its period character and has been upgraded over the years to make it something Greg can actually use. Because cars were built to be driven.
