Mercedes was supposed to be finished with racing after the tragedy at Le Mans in 1955. History repeated that version for almost seventy years. Chassis 5500640 proves the story was never complete. Built quietly inside the Mercedes Sportabteilung in 1956, this 300SL Gullwing became one of the last true Silver Arrows. It won at Monza, carried Stirling Moss through the Tour de France Automobile, and then vanished into private life for nearly four decades.
