Hot Rod Racing with Belly Tankers
Hot Rods were hot after WWII and returning GI's had a need for speed. These largely self taught enthusiasts were determined to build cars that would go fast. What they lacked in financial resources they made up for in inventiveness. They understood that wind resistance kept their converted Model As and Model Ts from going much faster. They need to streamline their designs. Inspired by German land speed record setters from the 1930s they came up with an original way to build streamlined racers. They bought surplus external aviation fuel tanks from junkyards and turned them into screaming machines.
