The First NASCAR Champion | Roads & RIdes

Published in Video

The Justice Brothers were the first sponsors of a NASCAR team and knew how to pick the winners. Their team won the first year of the NASCAR race series with Red Byron driving a 1939 Ford V8 Coupe tuned by Red Vogt and owned by Raymond Parks. The Justice Brothers had a knack for being at the right place and the right time in automotive history. Ed Justice Jr. relives the memories of his father and uncles through the first NASCAR champion to their days working with Frank Kurtis at Kurtis Kraft. The Ford flat-head V8 put out a measly 85 horsepower but it was enough to win. The biggest advancement wasn't in the engine but it was the inclusion of hydraulic brakes. "You get going fast you want to stop fast" said Ed Justice Jr. The winning combination of Red Byron, Red Vogt, The Justice Brothers and the Ford V8 made the first NASCAR season a memorable legend that could never be replicated.
