Mercedes-Benz 600 Part 2: Recommissioning the Comfort Hydraulic System | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

Mercedes-Benz 600 Part 2: Recommissioning the Comfort Hydraulic System | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

Join Iain Tyrrell in this highly anticipated episode of Tyrrell's Classic Workshop as he dives deeper into the intricate world of the Mercedes-Benz 600, a car renowned for its unparalleled engineering complexity. In this second part, Iain gets his hands dirty, tackling the formidable task of recommissioning the car's Byzantine hydraulic system—what Mercedes-Benz calls the Comfort Hydraulic System, or Fingertip Hydraulic System. In the Part 1, Les, Marcus, and Pete managed to breathe life back into the 600's engine, setting the stage for today's technical deep dive. You asked for more of the Mercedes-Benz 600 and more nerdy technical content, and we’ve delivered! This episode is a must-watch for those fascinated by the mechanics behind one of the most technically advanced luxury cars ever built. Before rolling up his sleeves, Iain demystifies some of the myths surrounding the Mercedes-Benz 600's various complex systems. The car's design is akin to an aircraft, incorporating vacuum, high-pressure air, electric, and hydraulic systems—all working in harmony. The journey begins with refilling the hydraulic fluid reservoir with the correct fluid. Iain then meticulously bleeds the system to ensure smooth oil flow, a task that is far from straightforward. With the fluid under pressure, he performs a leak check—critical, given that any leaks at 2,750 psi could cause serious damage. Iain uses the original Mercedes-Benz 600 Service Manual to guide us through the detailed process of recommissioning the Comfort Hydraulic System. After ensuring the system is leak-free, Iain moves on to repairing one of the car's hydraulically driven windows, stripping the door to its core to adjust the switch and tappets controlling the window lift. And for a bit of fun, Iain conducts a unique 'Wurst test'—a quirky twist you won't want to miss! If you've ever wanted to know how to troubleshoot or make the Mercedes-Benz 600's Comfort Hydraulic System work, this episode is for you. Follow along as Iain shares his expertise and passion for classic cars, providing a masterclass in automotive engineering and restoration.
