Most new electric pickups cost a fortune, and the cheaper alternatives aren't even available yet. Instead of waiting for manufacturers to build something affordable, I decided to take matters into my own hands and turn a tiny electric BMW into a fully functional pickup truck. The goal? Build an electric pickup for under $10,000, with a usable truck bed, modern features, and over 300 miles of total driving range. Over the course of this build I: • Bought a 2017 BMW i3 REx with over 100,000 miles, sight unseen • Cut apart the BMW's carbon-fiber body • Designed and reinforced a custom rear cab structure • Built a custom pickup bed from scratch • Added a rear window and weatherproofed the cab • Upgraded the factory infotainment system with a massive 12.3-inch Apple CarPlay screen • Modified the BMW's range extender controls • Designed and 3D printed custom parts • Upgraded the interior and repaired neglected components • Put the finished truck through some real-world tests • And added a few features BMW would NEVER offer from the factory... Best of all, I kept a running total of every dollar spent throughout the entire project. But could I actually build a useful electric pickup truck for less than $10,000?
