The Permission Slip: Jim Glass’ 1967 Trans-Am Camaro

“I had to talk to my mother really nice, because I didn't even have a driver's license,” Jim Glass says. “So she gave me a permission slip, and I went racing.” He was 14. In Kingston, New York, racing was simply what the Glass family did on weekends. His father and uncles ran dirt modifieds, and when his father moved into a faster class, the old car became Jim’s. Fifty years later, Glass is still racing. His 1967 Camaro is a real period Trans-Am car, raced by Jocko Maggiacomo in 1972 before being parked, rattle-canned white, and forgotten. Underneath it was a remarkable survivor. Glass brought it back with an original DZ302, factory-book Corvette brakes, and a final detail from Maggiacomo himself, who lettered the car again four decades after the first time. The car gives him nothing at Lime Rock. No power steering. No power brakes. Just the feel that Glass learned on dirt.
