KAIKADO • A Type 7 Film

Published in Video

From a small atelier in Kyoto, a family have been chasing mastery of their craft for nearly 150 years. Slowly but surely, Kaikado are today renowned the world over for their ‘Chazutsu’ cylindrical tea caddies, which remain hand made and retain each of the 130 processes used in the manufacture since the company’s founding in 1875. Created with impeccable precision, a lid manufactured this year will silkily glide down to make an airtight seal on a caddy manufactured half a century prior. Caddies become heirlooms, and many return to the Kyoto atelier for repairs or adjustments after many years. Kaikado is now on its sixth generation; Takahiro Yagi carries the torch forward, balancing his duty to his family history with his passion for cars. “I think of Kaikado in the same way as the 964 RS. Each craftsperson has their own unique personality, but those individual characters each play a critical role in forming this thing we call Kaikado.” Directed and Edited by Andrea Capone Produced by ERG Media Director of Photography and Colorist: Paolo Fossati Sound Engineer and Score: Matteo Parolini Runner: Luca Shioya Translator: Howard Sun Type 7 Team: Executive Producer: Ted Gushue Executive Producer: Franziska Jostock Creative Director: Thomas Walk Editor: Nat Twiss Type 7 is the daily magazine for those who are driven • Powered by Porsche Subscribe here to stay up to date with videos on the most interesting personalities and creators from the world of cars, architecture, art and design, head over to Instagram to keep up to date with our daily storytelling on the @type7 account, and head to our website for the full experience. https://www.instagram.com/type7 https://www.type7.com
