1,000 Miles in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL: Magnus Walker at Mille Miglia

Published in Video

History comes to life at the legendary Mille Miglia 2019 – this year designer and car collector Magnus Walker took to the wheel of one of our Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. Subscribe to Mercedes-Benz on YouTube: His 300 SL was produced in 1955 and had to face the challenge of finishing the 1,000-mile rally through Italy. “It’s a bucket list event, driving the Mille Miglia in this iconic car!” says Magnus Walker about his participation in the craziest classic car event there is. Ready for a ride? Join the adventure of Magnus Walker and the journey of the 300 SL... About the 300 SL: It was to be the perfect surprise: the 300 SL production sports car Mercedes-Benz presented at the International Motor Sports Show in New York on 6 February 1954 was a sensation. At its world premiere, the coupé with its characteristic gullwing doors made the hearts of experts and public skip a beat. Technical details such as its space frame and its extraordinary door design were without paragon among the sports cars of its day. The bodywork with its flat, long bonnet and distinctive splash guards above the wheel arches featured many elements of the W 194/11 prototype from 1953, for instance the typical powerdomes. And the family likeness extended to the area below the bonnet, too, for the W 198 I adopted the fuel direct injection of the prototype. In the 300 SL the 6-cylinder in-line engine had a nominal output of 215 PS (158 kW) enabling a top speed of 155 miles/hour. About the Mille Miglia: The 1000 Miglia is the legendary road race that used to take place between 1927 and 1957. At that time, 77 drivers entered the race. The Mille Miglia started in Brescia, the track ran through Cervia, Rome, Bologna and ended again in Brescia. The aim was to complete the route as quickly as possible. The rally has been a classic car event since 1977. The most exciting thing about the rally is the combination of the long distance that the classic cars have to cover and the trips through various city centres and the slightly mountainous landscapes. Nowadays, the "motor sport" aspect has faded into the background – even though most people still like to test how fast they can cover the sections with their classic cars.
