Erik Comas | Lancia Stratos

At the hands of ex-Formula One driver Erik Comas, the legendary Lancia Stratos rally car competes again, more than 40 years after it's final WRC victory. Erik's passion for the Stratos began when he was a child living in France, and saw the car competing at the Rally Monte Carlo. After a racing career that consisted of competing in F1 in the early 90s, the JGTC in Japan and even WRC, Erik's focus turned to the Rally Legend. in 2011 Erik began competing in championships with a goal to not only keep the Stratos racing, but also winning. With an Italian championship title, Tour de Corse and Targa Florio to name a few, there's no doubt he's doing just that. The Bertone-designed Lancia Stratos won the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975 and 1976 and continued to dominate at the hands of privateers for a full decade after. Less that 500 were made and very few of risk original cars the way Erik does. In 1986 to commemorate the 10 years of the final championship win, a World Stratos Meeting was held, with a gathering from examples of the cars across the world. No such event had taken place until Erik teamed up Zenith Watches to celebrate the 40 years of the victory by holding a one-time event in Biella, Italy this past Summer. The World Stratos Meeting in Biella hosted 40 cars and saw the introduction of 40 limited-edition Zenith El Primero Watches. Erik also designed the event to be incorporated into the Rally Lana Storico, an event that host 200+ vintage cars and races on closed roads throughout the Italian mountainside. This gave the participates the opportunity to drive the cars on closed rally stages, while Erik competed in the actual event. With such a recognizable shape, that still looks current today, the Lancia Stratos is one of those rare examples of dreams becoming cemented in reality.
