DRIVEN: HWA EVO (+ full factory tour & N24 racing access!) | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat

The HWA EVO is an incredible, modern interpretation of the Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 Evo II. In this latest episode of The Driver’s Seat, Henry Catchpole not only drives it on some amazing roads in Germany, but has a look at the build process at etc factory and visits the Nurburgring to watch three HWA EVO.Rs take on the wild 24 hour race - yes, the same race that Max Verstappen was in this year. You might not have heard of HWA but the letters are the initials of Hans Werner Aufrecht and he was one of the two founders of AMG. When that company was sold to Mercedes in the late 1990s he set up again on his own and for the last quarter of a century HWA has quietly been running the three-pointed star’s DTM programme and building some of the brand’s most special cars, such as the CLK GTR and the SL65 AMG Black Series. Aufrecht was also the man who originally suggested the Evolution II to Mercedes, so it was only appropriate that this modern incarnation should be the company’s first car with its own VIN plate. And being a company that’s familiar with building racing cars, what better way to prove to the world that you’ve built something special than by racing it in the Nurburgring 24 hours?! And not just one car, but three! Although only 100 will be made (at a cost of €814,000, plus taxes, each) the HWA EVO has been fully homologated, which sets it apart from many other restomods, continuations and reimagined past masters. Under the carbon bonnet is a twin-turbo V6 producing 520hp and 440lb ft of torque and as the whole car weighs in at 1480kg or 3260lb the straight-line performance is more than decent. However, the suspension is where the magic happens and it’s int the corners that you can really tell this has come from a team of engineers with huge experience in racing.
