Building a Grand Cherokee with a Cummins Turbo Diesel Inline-Four
Dom Barker is building a pretty unique project at his engineering company Orangeworks in Castle Douglas, Scotland. It starts with a Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) with a 2.7 L OM612 diesel inline-five that makes 161 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 N⋅m) of torque. Not a lot of power but plenty to move a normal Grand Cherokee around but this isn’t a normal Grand Cherokee. The SUV weighs just under 3 tons due to the 12 mm ballistic plate in the doors and on the floor. So Dom and his team will be replacing the inline-five with a Cummins 3.9 L ISB 170 turbo diesel inline-four from a 2002 Iveco EuroCargo. They plan on upgrading the engine with a Garrett HX60 turbocharger to make around 300 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. We’ll keep you updated as the project progresses.
