Corvette Z06 with an Electric Motor
Genovation Cars just broke the top speed record for electric automobiles using a custom built 2006 Corvette Z06. The record was broken on February 23 at Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds and Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida. The car, called the GXE (Genovation Extreme Electric), was able to reach 186.8 mph (300.6 kph) which bests the previous record of 177 mph (284 kph) held by a Finnish prototype.
The Corvette’s drivetrain was designed and built in the US and includes two electric motors capable of 1,200 amps total connected to the factory six-speed transmission and a 44 kWh battery pack made from 18650 cells found in a Tesla. This combo is good for 700+ horsepower and 600+ lb-ft of torque, 0-60 mph in three seconds, near 50/50 weight disbribution and lower center of gravity. Genovation estimates the Corvette would get 40-50 miles of range under fast driving or 130 miles under normal driving.
If you are interested in your own electric Corvette, Genovation estimates it will cost you $330,000 or $290,000 if you provide your own car. Their plans are to build 5-10 per year with a no more than 200 total being built.
