Bent Fender Fab’s Twin-Engine Honda Prelude

custom Honda Prelude with two engines

Bent Fender Fab has 20 years of experience in mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineering. Those skills were valuable when transforming a 2000 Honda Prelude into a custom twin-engine vehicle that won an engineering award at a Daimler show. The unique car can be yours with the winning bid on Cars & Bids.

The project started in 2008 when Bent Fender Fab purchased the car for a daily driver. The car came from the factory with a 2.2 L H22A4 inline-four. However in 2009 they installed another 2.2 L H22A4 inline-four in the back of the car for a Senior project at Oregon Institute of Technology.

Both engines feature factory ECUs, custom exhaust systems, and balance-shafts removed. Combined they produce 400 hp and 312 lb-ft of torque. The motors run factory ECUs, aluminum radiators, and Turbo mufflers. Each engine is fed fuel by two pumps in a foam-filled 12-gallon fuel cell.

The motors are paired to M2Y2 five-speed manual transmissions with factory clutches, differentials, and axles. Gear shifts are controlled by a single shifter linked to a set of push/pull cables. Because each engine can run independently, the car can be driven in FWD or AWD.

In 2017 Bent Fender Fab decided to take the project to the next level. This involved designing a custom chassis using CAD. The certified welder fabricated the chassis using 1.75-inch DOM tubing and certified by a welding inspector. The resulting weight bias is 53/47.

The car has OEM front Prelude subframes in the front and rear. The suspension features a manual steering rack, lowering springs, and OEM shocks with raised top hats. A set of custom rear upper control arms were fabricated for optimized caster, instant center, and bumper steer.

Braking is handled by factory front Prelude brakes and another set of front Prelude brakes installed in the rear. A Wilwood adjustable bias allows the driver to adjust the braking bias. Covering those are a set of Rota Slipstream 15×7-inch wheels with Toyo R888R 225/50 tires.

A carbon fiber hood covers the front powertrain. Bent Fender Fab filled the sunroof with a fiberglass panel. Custom air intakes were installed on the quarter-panels and trunk to keep the rear powertrain happy.

Inside Bent Fender Fab installed a pair of Kirkey seats with four-point harnesses and S2000-style pedals. Behind that is a custom firewall. The AC controls, door panels, center console, and headliner were removed. The factory glass windshield remains but the side and rear windows were swapped for Lexan.
