Jacques Tati ayant été ruiné par l'échec de PLAYTIME, ce film est rendu possible grâce au soutien financier d'Alec Wildenstein, qui fait, en contrepartie, attribuer le premier rôle féminin à Maria Kimberly, sa compagne d'alors.
