24 Hours of Le Mans - 1968

Published in Video

Following its victory at Daytona, Porsche 907-005 returned to Germany and was fitted with new vertical stabilizing fins on the rear bodywork in preparation for the high speeds of Le Mans. Wearing the number 33 for the April test session, Stommelen was 3rd-quickest overall in 005. Originally scheduled for June, the race was postponed until September and by that time the 907s had been replaced by the 908s, the whole of Porsche's 907 effort lasting just months. Now wearing the number 35, 907-005 is seen here competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans driven by the Soler-Roig and Lins team. Unfortunately, the car retired with an oiling problem, thus ending its major racing career. Still in Le Mans livery, 005 was used years later by Porsche to test fire suppression systems, where it was mostly destroyed.
