From the seller’s description:
Rare 1983 BMW R80ST with Hannigan STe fairing
Here is BMW’s best handling – and very rare – air-head motorcycle matched with Hannigan’s famous sport-touring fairing, maintained by BMW mechanics.
The bike is a 1983 BMW R80ST with 68,000 miles on it. A color-matched Hannigan Sport Touring fairing (model STe) is complemented with BMW panniers and a narrow handlebar to complete the sport-touring package and further enhance the handling on this nimble bike. Dealer maintained (mostly by Cyclewerks of Barrington), never stored, in original trim and paint.
The R80ST was introduced in 1983, a street version of the skunk-works R80G/S that surprised everyone by winning the 1981 Paris-Dakar race and rejuvenating the BMW brand. The ST inherited the Monolever rear end, frame and engine from the G/S, but changed the suspension, front wheel and riding position for pavement riding. From the start, it built a reputation for light, stable, NS precise handling matched with a strong-pulling 800cc engine that was smoother than that 650 or 1,000cc versions. Cycle magazine said it was “easy to ride fast right from the first meeting”.
In spite of that, BMW only made 5,963 between 1982 and 1984, and only about 1,000 of those were imported to the USA. So the bike is increasingly rare and sought-after. It now has a cult following across the world.
This particular bike is especially rare as the dealer installed a Hannigan “STe” fairing prior to the bike being delivered. The fairing is super-slick – Hannigan’s literature from the 80’s touted “European handling…American comfort. The Sport Tourer’s deliver frame-mount protection and cafe-racer handling…with style.” It’s aerodynamic, great to ride behind, includes a surprising amount of storage, and still turns heads.
All the parts are original (it even has the original manuals, tool kit, tire pump, and cable lock keyed to the ignition!), except for the following:
**REPLACED WITH OEM PARTS**
- BMW Panniers
- BMW Cylinder covers
- BMW Side covers (color matched to original bike color)
- BMW Hand grips and foot peg covers
- KRAUSER chrome pannier rack and rear rack
- HANNIGAN side view mirrors
**ALTERED FOR THE HANNIGAN FAIRING**
- The fairing itself, color matched to bike color
- Headlight nacelle removed; headlight mounts inside fairing
- Narrow handlebars fitted
- WORKS rear shock absorber
- METZLER Sportec Klassik tires
- PANASONIC battery
The bike was purchased in 1984 with less than 1,000 miles on it from the original dealer. The first owner had found the bike too tall, and it’s true the bike is sized for taller riders. The second – and current – owner has BMW dealer service records going back to the purchase of the bike. The speedometer has been repaired by Palo Alto Speedometer twice, and they seem to have finally figured out how to keep it running; accuracy is improved, and total mileage is correct to within +/-200 miles. Within the last three years, the carbs have been rebuilt, new tires installed, and rear driveshaft splines greased. It’s being ridden today!
The left fairing has un-retouched scratches from when the bike tipped in a parking lot last year, caused by an improperly set side stand. Other than that, the bike has never been down. The gas tank has surface scratches from the tank bag. All paint is original except when the fairing and replacement side panels were color matched and clearcoated. There is some surface oxidation on the still-original muffler. While not show-quality, the bike looks great.
Also available are various parts and accessories, including the tank bag, original cylinder covers, original side panels, gaskets, filters, light bulbs and spare battery.
