A race for only the very toughest: When Saab took on the Baja 1000

Desert racing – the Baja 1000, particularly – has its own unique challenges and obstacles, but to Saab in the late Sixties, it stood to reason that if its cars and its drivers could hold up under the worst of European rallies, then they could tackle the Baja 1000 too. So in 1969, amid a field that included James Garner in his Oldsmobile 4-4-2 and Steve McQueen in the Baja Boot, Saab entered a factory team consisting of two 99s driven by no less than Erik Carlsson and Ingvar Lindqvist, whom this video follows from preparation through finishing the race, a feat in itself.
