Hemmings Find of the Day – 1976 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega

Published in

Fresh from a 1,000-hour sympathetic restoration, this 1976 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega is said to have amassed just 3,200 miles  in 42 years. From the seller’s description:

Cosworth #3283 is the lowest mileage Dark Blue Metallic version in existence with but 3,200 miles on the odometer.

The car has undergone a year-long/1,000 hour ‘sympathetic’ restoration in an effort to have the car appear as it did the day it left the Lordstown, Ohio plant. Every component in the car has been disassembled, corrected, and reassembled. It is an original paint car that has undergone a 100+ hour paint correction effort.

What truly makes this car special beyond the mileage and condition is a sheet of paper found under the passenger footwell insulation signed by the 6 production line supervisors on duty that day. I was able to contact one of the signees and when I informed him of what I found, he responded: “you found it!”. “I felt this was a special car and I put that paper in there hoping that one day someone would find it…and you did!”

The car runs ad drives (as you would expect) as new; the shifter action is rifle-bolt accurate; the glass shows no marks. Conveying with the car are the OE Delco spiral shocks (NOS Koni shocks are fitted); the OE Delco AM/8-track radio & speakers (retro-look head unit/contemporary speakers are fitted); and a 1-piece cast master cylinder is fitted (2-piece restored/rebuilt MC conveys).
