Although nearly all of the 120 teams scheduled to start the 2017 edition of the Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty arrived in Jacksonville, Florida, on Wednesday, the preliminaries kicked off early Thursday morning with official registration and inspection. The latter of the two is always simplistic because the cars have to be legally registered for highway use. However, the inspection includes checks for mandatory safety equipment, including but not limited to a fire extinguisher, water, flares, jack, spare tire and first aid kit. They also check for a GPS system, which is not permitted per Great Race rules. After registration and inspection, teams made their way onto the Jacksonville beltway for their speedometer calibration runs. It’s a process that is repeated at the start of each day of the Great Race.

On Friday, teams will assemble for a mandatory meeting and will then prepare for the traditional Great Race support rally, the Hagerty Trophy Run; an optional preliminary that doubles as a tiebreaker for the Great Race. The Hagerty Trophy Run will start at the host hotel – the Hyatt Regency – at 11:30 a.m. and the first car is scheduled to return at 3:35 p.m.
