Hemmings Find of the Day – 1978 Dodge Power Wagon Utiline

Published in

While mid-seventies pickups from GM, Ford and Chevrolet are plentiful, survivors from Dodge are less so. Perhaps fewer civilians shopped for Dodge pickups, or perhaps the bulk of production went to the military (in the form of the CUCV M880 and M890) or to municipal departments, which seemed to prefer the Dodge Power Wagon for snow removal (at least in the Northeast). This 1978 Dodge Power Wagon Utiline, for sale on, is something of a rare find, since most of the ’78 Dodge pickups we run across seem to be the Li’l Red Express variant. Complete with plow and replacement parts including a tailgate and rust-free radiator support, this Citrus Green Poly example has had the same owner since 1999, and has been off the road and stored indoors since 2004. That’s not to say it’s a concours-contender, and the owner is clear that it’s neither blemish nor rust free. It does appear to be a solid truck that wouldn’t take a significant amount of work to make show-worthy, giving its next owner a slightly unusual alternative to a Ford F-150 or Chevy K Series. From the seller’s description:

1978 Dodge Power wagon, built in Canada,I 360 2bbl,auto, 4×4, newprocess transfer case, owned since 1999, stored inside everyday, drove locally to shows in the summer, pulled a trailer for my mower for a short time, then it ended up off the road (2004) never driven on the roads in the winter, only plowed my personal property then back in the garage, orignal paint (I believe it’s been cleared at some point) original interior, (one edge driver side needs repair) original wood in bed ( soaked with linseed oil 1999) original spare with hanger in bed and original tailgate in bed the one on the truck is new (bought in 2005) dodge part, everything works fine. underneath was undercoated years ago I hand painted parts that you can see (front & rear end ect..) It has dings, scratches, minor dents, small spots of rust that haven’t changed much in the time I’ve owned it, straight bumpers, chrome is thin, I owned a auto repair shop, lots of things done thru the years ( gaskets, brakes, tires, and more) like all of these trucks radiator support rusted at the bottom, still supports everything well, comes with a used California radiator support I found last year. THIS TRUCK SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED TO BE USED AS AN EVERYDAY DRIVER!, SURVIVOR QUALITY, runs well and drives well, but it is 38 years old, great show piece, value should increase with time!
