Hemmings Sunday Cinema – Charade 1958, Surge Checkers, The Streets of San Francisco

One of the first runnings of the Charade circuit in France was captured in this 16-minute video from 1958 showing plenty of Ferraris Porsches, Lotii, and other interesting cars in their natural habitat – at speed and on the track. Even if you don’t understand French, you’ll understand the common language of competition. (via)

* The folks behind the marketing of Surge, a late 1990s soft drink, had a number of unconventional approaches to getting the word out about their Mountain Dew competitor, including the rehabilitation of a couple dozen Checker taxis. This newsreel from 1998 tells the story.

* As much as we love the inseguimento, and as many as we’ve discovered and bookmarked for use in the future, let’s bring the car chase segment of Sunday Cinema back to the United States with Leslie Nielsen in a 1973 or 1974 episode of “The Streets of San Francisco.” It’s a bit unsettling to see Nielsen passing up all the opportunities for comedy in this clip.
