Aimed at commercial customers, DKW’s Schnellaster series came in a variety of formats, ranging from compact pickups though panel vans. Window vans, like this 1957 DKW Schnellaster Kastenwagen 3=6, for sale on Hemmings.com, were also part of the lineup, though not many made their way to these shores (in fact, this is the first window van we remember seeing in our classifieds). Like most of the others (discounting special electric powered variants), this Schnellaster comes with the “3=6” two-stroke three-cylinder engine, said to make power equivalent to a six-cylinder engine of the period. It’s been sitting since 1970 and will need a complete restoration, but once finished (or at least running) is all but guaranteed to be the star of any German-themed car show. From the seller’s description:
1957 DKW F800 SCHNELLASTER/KASTENWAGEN VAN, since 1970. this van has been sitting in northern california since that time in and out of the weather at times, it seems to be about 87-90% origl. and all there, has dkw 3 cyl. motor, but i will not swear if the numbers are matching as far as cubic in. and numbers to vin. plate, it does have the origl. vin./id. plates under the hood. and 3 or 4 speed manual trans. stock wheels with origl. hub caps, origl. seats, engine will not turn over at present time, and will need brake work to make it stop. it is a rolling van now, but would not take a whole lot to get it on the road to be a daily driver. this van will need to be restored if you want it perfect. as far as i can tell it has surface rust only, with nice patina. I have the origl. cal. plates for it and a clean title in my name and have owned it for about 2 years now.
