Hemmings Find of the Day – 1971 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Custom

Published in

While we’ve included a number of photos of this 1971 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Custom two-door hardtop for sale on for reference, we really only need one to convey the car’s story and its appeal: the photo of the clear plastic cover on the back seat and part of the front seat. This car was preserved, not in the museum sense of the word, but in the Scotchgard, dark garage, religious maintenance sense of the word. Combined with a thorough mechanical refurbishment, it should need very little these days. From the seller’s description:

This original 1971 Olds Custom 88 has the big block 455 Rocket motor. The car has been stored in a locked garage in Southern California since at least 2005. The elderly lady who owned it probably has not driven it much since 2002 when her husband passed. The car was bought new by the couple in Downey, California. The original dealer license plate rings are still attached to the car. The car is on California non-op so there are no back fees to California buyers. Out of state buyers please check with your own DMV.

The car was removed and over $3,500 invested to get the car back to its original state. The body was cleaned and buffed. The interior was cleaned the engine was detailed. A new radiator and carb rebuilt along with the gas tank removal and cleaned. (Receipts given to the new owner).

I’ve driven this car a short distance. It does have the original or fairly original bias-ply tires (15″) that need to be removed and replaced with some quality radials. The shocks appear to be soft. The hood handle near the driver’s foot is gone. A string is attached to pop the hood. The dashboard is pristine. (see the pictures)

There is a small hole in the exhaust pipe that goes over the rear differential. Open up the exhaust with duals, and flowmasters…yeah! The car is what it is. An original version of the 1971 Delta 88 2 door hardtop with a vinyl top. The original seat covers are still on the rear seats and passenger side. We have all four hubcaps.

The following is what was repaired to make this car ready for sale: Rear brakes, front brakes, control arm bushings, sway bar link replaced, valve cover gaskets, manifold intake gasket replaced, fuel pump replaced, fuel filter, spark plugs, cap, rotor, carburetor rebuilt, radiator replaced, (there may be more since I was taking notes from the lawyer..
