From the pictures, this 1974 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible for sale on Hemmings.com sure doesn’t look like an all-original unrestored example, but that’s just what the seller claims it to be, and we can indeed see how any top-of-the-line convertible such as this one would receive the utmost in care and maintenance over the years – as long as the owner has a garage long enough to fit it, that is. From the seller’s description:
Nicknamed “BIG RED”, this ’74 Grandville convertible, an all original survivor, is in excellent condition. Must be seen to be appreciated. Only 3000 of this body style were made in 1974. BIG RED has always been kept in a garage and has been very well maintained.
Engine is 455 CID V8 with single 4 barrel carburetor. Transmission is factory 3 speed Turbo Hydra-matic with rear wheel drive and 2.93:1 rear end. Brakes are front disc and rear drum. Features power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, cruise control. Tires are Sigma P235/75 mounted on GM rally wheels with trim rings.
Original exterior paint is virtually flawless with only a couple of minor chip touch-ups. The body lines and the gaps have been professionally appraised as very good. The chrome bumpers, grill, stainless trim, and the Fender skirts are all excellent condition. Metal light housings in rear show minor light pitting.
Original interior white leather upholstery is in excellent condition. Original dash, instruments, carpet, and all knobs and handles in excellent condition. Power windows and locks function well. Original radio in dash (not working) and a Kenwood, AM/FM/CD Satellite radio is hidden neatly in glove compartment, with the original tire pressure label. The trunk is clean with correct factory liner.
The original white convertible top, liner, back plastic window and boot cover in excellent condition. Top goes down with ease. Minor issue is that the center bow is detached from top material and requires a bit of adjustment when putting the top back up.
“BIG RED” is a beautiful, original, unrestored survivor, except for routine maintanance items. The areas noted as worn or aged are very consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle adding authenticity to its originality. The car has been very well maintained and always stored in a garage.
“BIG RED” drives like a dream. The car rides beautifully, floats along the highway or back roads with ease. Gets a lot of attention with the shiny bright red exterior and white leather interior. This car is equally at home at car shows, in parades, or on the road.
