The Morris name is set to return, in the form of a new Morris Commercial van. The Morris JE is an all-electric commercial van with styling cues that recall the classic J-type, with its flat nose and forward controls.

There are few details beyond those basics. The current version of Morris Commercial is a UK-based start-up that secured the rights to the old name. Like the old Morris Commercial van, this new one is on built on a modular chassis that will allow several different body variants. The company’s press release states that the JE has a lightweight carbon fiber body, which most likely adds to the available range between charges and cargo weight, but also brings up the question of cost. No details have been given on where the Morris JE will be sold.

Commercial fleets are one area where electric vehicles could find widespread adoption in the near future, especially in Europe, where cities like London have congestion charges — with exemptions for electric power — to limit traffic. Range is less of an issue for regular delivery routes, and vehicles can charge every night at a central location. There is a similar logic behind Amazon’s recent investment in EV startup Rivian.

Worcestershire-based Morris Commerical says it will release more details about the upcoming JE van, and show off a fully operational engineering prototype, this fall.
