Metalworking class to be offered by NYC’s Keino Cycles

An exclusive small-group instructional class on the basics of metal shaping and custom sheetmetal fabrication will be offered at the shop of Keino Sasaki, one of the premiere custom bike builders of the last decade.

Keino has a unique take on custom motorcycle building and his exploits are well-known by enthusiasts throughout the country. One of his more recognizable projects was the “Widow Jane,” an early 1950s Vincent Rapide he collaborated on with expert Vincent restorer Stephen Pate. His custom work on Harley-Davidsons often involves marrying engine cylinders from different eras into one bike, such as Panhead and Shovelhead, Shovelhead and Evolution, Knucklehead and Panhead, etc.

The classes will be geared towards the hobbyist and beginning bike builder and will cover metal shaping, understanding and usage of basic tools, introduction to more expensive and elaborate metalworking equipment that will help you stretch, shrink, and planish bare steel to shape fenders, gas tanks, side covers, and many other necessary bike-build items.

Classes will be offered twice in the same weekend, June 22-23, at Keino’s shop on 12 Van Dyke Street, Brooklyn, New York. The course cost is $450 per session, which will be a full eight hours of instruction, including lunch and a 20-page text booklet, written by Keino, to take home. Registration requires a $150 deposit with the balance to be paid the day of class. Class size is limited to 4-6 participants, with breakout groups of two for actual hands-on instruction.
