Oldsmobile’s Toronado began life as a design sketch that was never intended to go beyond the “what if” stage. When approved for production, even Bill Mitchell was unsuccessful in getting the car downsized to a more sporting A-body platform, and instead the personal luxury coupe was built on the larger E-body platform. As if its futuristic looks weren’t enough to attract attention, the Toronado departed from tradition in another way, too – its front-mounted V-8 sent power to the front wheels instead of the rear.
