In 1955, Cadillac held a position of absolute dominance in the luxury-car field, selling 50 percent more cars than Packard, Lincoln and Imperial combined. To see why, you need look no further than the Series 62. It might have been Cadillac’s most humble offering, but it was built to impress, riding on a generous 129-inch wheelbase and propelled by a refined 331-cu.in. V-8 churning out 250 horsepower, mated to a no-longer-optional Hydra-Matic transmission. The Series 62 Sedan was the most popular Cadillac offering that year, with 44,904 produced, helping the division realize its best model year to date.
The 1955 models were only lightly restyled from the previous year – no sense in messing with a good thing. The look was tasteful and self-assured; this was a car that didn’t have to resort to extreme styling to attract buyers. One of the nicer touches for ’55 was the “Florentine curve” added to the base of the C-pillar on four-door cars.
This 1955 Cadillac 62 Series Sedan for sale on Hemmings.com appears to be ready to drive and enjoy. It’s nicely optioned, with a four-way power seat, a signal-seeking Wonderbar radio, aftermarket air conditioning and the novelty of the Autronic Eye automatic headlamp dimmer. Even if the incredibly low odometer reading of 1,177 miles is undocumented, as the seller says, it’s claimed that it looks and drives like a new car.
