Hemmings Find of the Day – 1971 Datsun 240Z

Published in

After decades of being passed over by collectors, Datsun 240Zs appear to be getting some of the respect they deserve. While current buyers favor Day One cars, the truth of the matter is this: by the late 1970s, the vast majority of Datsun Z cars had been customized by their owners with aftermarket wheels, spoilers, air dams, and even fender flares, which permitted the use of wider-than stock wheels and looked pretty damn cool by the standards of the day. This 1971 Datsun 240Z, for sale on, is a perfect example of an enthusiast-owned Z from the mid to late 1970s, down to the wide five-slot rear wheels and the triple Weber carburetor setup. It’s been clocked at 152 MPH on track, proving that the modifications were for more than just appearance. Its Day Two (or later) current state won’t appeal to everyone, but for those who missed out on the chance to own a modified Z back in the day, this car checks off all the right boxes. From the seller’s description:

Rare 240Z with 77,600 original miles. Z’s are really gaining in value. Purchased from the oringinal owner, currently a retired doctor. This Datsun was stored and driven sparingly for the last few years, lots of recent maintenance to help insure its road worthiness. I has an interesting history. The was the orininal owner’s first new car. Daily driven for the first 5 years, then began upgrades to serve as a rally car/show car. In 1979, this Datsun received an honorable mention in a design contest held by Datsun. In 1980 it qualified for the CTP 150mph club at 152 mph. Since the early 1990’s this vehicle was primarily a cruise in/show car driven less than 100 miles per year. Description as follows: numbers matching drivetrain, motor rebuilt at 64K,ported,polished,blueprinted,performance valves and springs,header,3-42DCOE Weber carbs, high output ignition system and coil, light weight clutch, vehicle starts and runs great, everything works, heat, lights, etc, stock aluminum slot front wheels, 9″ aluminum rear wheels, new BF Goodrich radial TA tires, new ground control coil over adjustable springs, reinforced frame rails for improved handling interior, factory bucket seat interior, older aftermarket AM/FM radio, entire interior is original and still in very good condition, exterior – new base/clear paint job by professional body shop ( DuPont products used). All glass was removed during paint process, body sanded to bare metal primed with polyester primer, urethane primer, sealer, silver base, black stripes, clear coated with three coats DuPont clear coat then sanded and buffed to shiny gloss finish. Custom installed wheel flares at all four corners, custom rear deck lid spoiler and lower front valance, Aftermarket Halogen head lamps, work performed in the last 90 days, flushed and cleaned fueled tank, coolant flush, new wiper blades, new spark plugs, new rear brake cylinders and hoses, new master cylinder, oil and filter change, new front calipers, pads, rotors and lines. In closing this is a fantastic 240Z with unique history and character that you will not find anywhere. The body flair kit gives a muscle look posture that demands attention. This is a true pleasure to drive and handles great with the newly equipped ground control coilover suspension.Due to the Weber Carbs, it takes ahwile to warm up in cold weather but runs strong once up to temperature. The undercarriage is in great shape (no rust issues and solid). The detail and high quality paint job set this car apart from others. The only blemish is on back bumper top bar that has some corrosion area the size of a quarter. The rest of the stainless trim and bumpers are excellent.
